Release Date: August 3rd, 2001 (moved back two weeks from July 20th, 2001) Sneak Previews: July 28th, 2001 (select cities) Title Note: (9/6/00) An MTV.com article about the casting of singer Mandy Moore gave the title as The Princess of Tribeca. The title is in fact The Princess Diaries. MPAA Rating: G Distributor: Walt Disney Pictures Production Company: Brownhouse Productions (Whitney Houston's company; this is their first feature film after 1997's TV movie, Cinderella) Cast: Anne Hathaway (Mia), Julie Andrews, Hector Elizondo, Heather Matarazzo, Larry Miller, Mandy Moore, Caroline Goodall, Sean O'Bryan, Robert Schwartzman, Erik Von Detten Hector Elizondo Note: Hector Elizondo and Garry Marshall have a long relationship; he appears in nearly every Marshall film. Director: Garry Marshall (Runaway Bride, Beaches, Pretty Woman, Overboard, The Other Sister; he may also helm Pretty Woman 2 someday) Screenwriter: Gina Wendkos (Jersey Girl, Coyote Ugly) Sequel Note: (8/14/01) According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gina Wendkos is already working on a sequel, with Anne Hathaway likewise optioned by Disney to reappear. They hope the cast, and Garry Marshall, will all return. No title was mentioned, but my guess is, of course, The Queen Diaries (or maybe The Prince Diaries?). Based upon: The young adult novel of the same title by Meg Cabot, to be published in October, 2000. It's worth noting that the book is intended as the first of a series, so if the film does well, there may be sequels. Premise This is the story of Mia (Hathway), a 15-year-old in San Francisco, who is surprised to discover that she is the sole heir of the crown of the small European nation of Genovia... she's a princess. It seems her Mom had this brief love affair with a member of the country's royal family, and kept it a secret from Mia, until now, when Mia's expected to take lessons from her newfound grandmother (Andrews) on how to be a princess. Can this big city girl get used to the life of royalty and responsibility? Filming: Production started on September 18th, 2000 in San Francisco, and had wrapped by early January, 2001.
